What we have been reading - 15th June 2023
Here's a selection of articles that we enjoyed reading recently:
Is the bear market over?: We have had a really strong rally off the October lows - does this mean the bear market is over and we are now in a bull market?
The Week in Charts: I always love Charlie Bilello's weekly chart email and this one is full of interesting nuggets.
An 85-year Harvard study on happiness found the No. 1 retirement challenge that 'no one talks about': Retirement is a big life event and it needs planning, not just from the financial standpoint.
Burnout Is the Echo of Self-Judgment: This is a thoughtful article on burnout, something every one of us feels at some point.
Hidden Forces: I loved the book that was written about Jim Simons, founder of Renaissance Technologies and this article takes an interesting angle.
Cat-Astrophe: This is not finance-related but as a cat-lover I found this fascinating. It's also very topical for Cayman given our problems with feral cats.
Why Children Need Nurturing Fathers: It's Father's Day coming up and this article seemed relevant.
FINALLY:
Why Are So Many Girls on SSRIs?: This article is scary and alarming, and not something I was aware of. We have a 13-year old daughter and it's getting clearer by the day that it's hard world for teenage girls. Really hard. I have tried to protect my daughter by not giving her a mobile phone, a decision that has been fueled to a large degree by Jonathan Haidt's work (you can read some of it here, here, here and here), but the pressures are so strong. It's something I worry about daily and I don't have any answers.
ENJOY!
