What I have been reading - 23rd August 2021
Here’s what I enjoyed reading over the past week or so:
Other People's Mistakes: Morgan Housel explores the differences in how we judge our own mistakes and other people's mistakes. Understanding this nuance of the human condition can change how you interact with people around you.
The 3 phases of making a major life change: A good piece by the Harvard Business Review that looks at how we can use the reflection gained during COVID to make real life change.
Hanging by a thread: Another thought-provoking article by Morgan Housel that makes you realise how fragile the world is.
Why Gold Bugs, Bond Bears and Amazon Skeptics Think Alike: Jason Zweig at the Wall Street Journal explains a critical part of investor psychology and a simple way to overcome it.
40 Things I Don't Know By Age 40: I love this antidote to 'what I know' from Ben Carlson. I am sure you can relate to many of them.
Magic Beans: Josh Browns does a brilliant job explaining not only the ridiculousness of macroeconomic forecasts, but even more ridiculous step investors take in basing their investment decisions on such forecasts. There is a better way!
Investing is No Field Of Dreams: One of the most important pieces of investing advice is contained within this short article.
FINALLY:
It's 'soul-draining': Healthworkers deployed to Covid hot zones are overwhelmed by deaths among the unvaccinated: This is just one of such articles - there are many stories like this coming out of America and the UK. This is now a pandemic of the unvaccinated. The shortage of beds in some US states has led to calls for patient vaccination status to be checked before admission to hospital. In other states people have been told, 'if you have an accident we don't have a bed for you'. It's total madness that an entirely preventable situation is unfolding.
ENJOY!
