40 Things at 40

I hit my 40s this week, and after much celebration I sat down to write the 40 things I have picked up over the past 40 years. You can call them my rules for life (work in progress).

In no particular order:

1 Lift weights – physical strength is incredibly empowering

2 Everything in life is about compromise

3 Make your partner your most important relationship – when that is right, everything is right

4 All good things come from discomfort

5 A good diet is about practicing the 80/20 rule

6 Ask for help and pay for help – someone else has always done it before, learn from them

7 Never stop learning – your purpose dies when you stop learning

8 The secret to health is to get enough sleep, eat well and exercise regularly

9 True wealth is what you don’t see

10 Never ever judge a book by its cover – people will always surprise you

11 Kindness, always

12 Always keep your debt manageable – debt limits your dreams

13 Never buy a property ‘as an investment’ – only buy the house(s) that is right for you and your family

14 Incentives matter – the wrong incentives can make good people do bad things

15 The line between good and bad gets very blurry when the incentives are wrong

16 The only thing that actually matters is your health and your family

17 Everyone has a vice (or two) – make sure they are manageable

18 Say no to your children, regularly – they will thank you for it

19 Children are capable of understanding far more than we give them credit for

20 Talk openly about money

21 Everyone is weird about money

22 Give your children roots and wings

23 The best way to invest is in low-cost index funds

24 Never tie your self-worth to your net-worth

25 You don’t need that many friends, you just need really good ones

26 The little things are the big things

27 Cherish the little things

28 It’s not worth paying up for expensive wine – very few people know the difference

29 Be optimistic – the world is always getting better

30 When we die, the only thing that will matter is whether we loved deeply and were loved

31 Never hold a grudge – life is far too short

32 Learn to be a good listener

33 Be generous with your time

34 Be generous with your money

35 Nothing can replace hard work, perseverance and consistency

36 Don’t follow your passion – find something you are good at and make it your passion

37 The more expensive stuff you own, the more you worry

38 Expensive stuff won’t make you happy

39 If you can’t control something, don’t focus on it

40 You can’t change the past – move on

Celebrating with my loves.

Celebrating with my loves.
